Space Monkeys – LPL
1st November 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm£10
Space Monkeys were the last ever band to be signed by Tony Wilson to his seminal Factory Records label after discovering the band playing in a snooker hall in Bury in 1995. The other unsigned band playing that night ‘Soft’ later went on to become Elbow.
Two years later Space Monkeys were signed by Jimmy Iovine to Interscope Records and had a worldwide hit ‘Sugar Cane’ which catapulted the band to MTV stardom in the U.S and Europe where they toured extensively playing arena tours alongside bands such as Smashing Pumpkins, Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind, Limp Bizkit selling over a quarter of a million copies of their debut album ‘The Daddy Of Them All’ worldwide.
Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown were both seen at Space Monkeys gigs in the 90’s and the bands songs featured on the soundtracks to the movie ‘Sliding Doors’ and ‘Dawsons Creek’ TV show.
The band recorded a second album ‘Escape From The 20th Century’ in New York with legendary hip hop producer Prince Paul who produced De La Souls ‘Three Feet High & Rising’. The final collapse of Tony Wilson’s resurrected Factory Records in 1999 led to the album being shelved and Space Monkeys disbanding until reforming in 2015 to play a handful of select festivals and shows.
Space Monkeys have spent the last 12 months writing and recording their first new album in 20 years which will be released on 01/01/2020 and features guest vocals from Denise Johnson, Kyla Brox and Mary Joanna Coogan. The album ‘Modern Actions’ was self produced and recorded at Lisa Stansfield’s ‘Gracieland’ studio in Rochdale and Spirit Studio’s in Manchester where The Stone Roses made their first ever recording.
‘Modern Actions’ will be released on the band’s own independent label.
‘The best band out of Manchester since the Inspiral Carpets roadies (Oasis) got ideas above their station’ – Tony Wilson 1996
